In 1983, Thompson, a principal research scientist in the CSIRO\'s Department of Oceanography, was charged with the murder of his wife, whose chopped-up body had been flushed down the toilet. He was found not guilty on the grounds of insanity. The Mental Health Review Tribunal twice recommended in the early 1990s that Thompson be released from prison, but the Tasmanian Government refused. This is his autobiography -- an extremely detailed and often disturbing account of a brilliant scientist\'s family life, marital problems and career. Thompson hanged himself in his cell in 1999 not long after a failed prison escape.
