After failed attempts to mine coal in Macquarie Harbour, deposits were found in Plunkett Point, and became the first successful coal mines in Van Diemen’s Land. Even the most superficial reading of the original documents show that, in the convict period from 1840’s until 1848 when the mines passed into private hands, there was gross incompetence in administering this station!
