The story of Port Arthur's notorious grave digger.
Mark Jeffery (1825-1894) was a rather colourful convict who had been the resident grave digger on the Isle of the Dead at the penal settlement of Port Arthur.
This is a facsimile of his biographical memoir, A Burglar's Life, originally published in 1893 and undoubtedly ghost-written in the first person.
Is is the story of a man, in his own words, who was initially transported for fifteen years after being charged with burglary and then attempted murder. He spent nearly four decades as a convict in the penal institutions of both Norfolk Island and Van Diemen's Land.
