Captain Joseph James operated out of Sydney from 1811 until 1820 when he became the first merchant at George Town, Van Diemen\'s Land. He died penniless in 1844, leaving his son Captain William Henry James to rebuild the family\'s fortunes. His story (and theirs) is told here through Broxam\'s introduction and the 72 family letters.
