On July, 1st.1983, the High Court of Australia declared the Gordon-below-Franklin dam illegal. The bulldozers which had entered the wilderness were then withdrawn. After a long and tumultuos national campaign, Tasmania's wild rivers were saved. (see p1) Below, unaltered, is the first edition introduction to Wild Rivers, written at the height of the campaign in early 1983.
