Of all the buildings at Port Arthur, the one which raises most interest is the "Model Prison" , or, as it was officially known, the "Separate Prison". The men in this prison were the worst of a very bad lot. In spite of the care they received, it is undoubtedly true that the rigour of separate treatment did adversely affect some prisoners' minds, especially those with a tendency towards mental instability.
